Charity calls on Chancellor to warm-up homes
Age Scotland has joined more than 80 civil society groups across the UK in calling on Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne MP to take action to end the scandal of cold homes.
In a letter Charity Chief Executive Brian Sloan, and his counterparts from across the Energy Bill Revolution coalition, said: "The political debate on how to reduce energy bills needs to focus on long term solutions, which will bring down energy costs for generations to come, rather than quick fixes."
Noting that the UK has "one of the worst rates of Excess Winter Deaths and fuel poverty in Europe" he called on the Chancellor in his Autumn Statement to "ensure that not only is the funding for energy efficiency not reduced but that it is significantly increased."
"This expansion could best be paid for by recycling carbon revenues from the Carbon Support Price and European Emissions Trading Scheme back into a home energy efficiency programme," said Mr Sloan. "It could make over half a million homes ‘super energy efficient' every year."
