Carer's Training

About Dementia people and members

There’s strong evidence that many carers are unaware of their rights, and this lack of knowledge may be a barrier to accessing vital support. We offer free, accessible training for unpaid carers of people with dementia to ensure they have a greater understanding of their rights, and how to access them.

National Lotteries Community Fund

In 2024 we were awarded funding from the National Lotteries Communities Fund. This has enabled us to develop our work supporting unpaid carers. As well as continuing to offer our range of carers' rights workshops for individuals, community groups and carer organisations, we will be engaging further with carers to learn where there are gaps in training in order to develop new workshops.

Current topics for our friendly, interactive workshops include:

  • An Introduction to carers' rights
  • The Carers (Act) Scotland 2016, with a focus on Adult Carer Support Plans
  • Hospital admissions and discharge
  • Self-Directed Support
  • Power of Attorney and other advance decision making
  • Welfare benefits and income maximisation for carers
  • Residential Care Costs

How to take part

We recognise that carers are often busy people, so our scheduled workshops will last a maximum of 90 minutes and we send out follow up information to all our attendees.

Self-study platform

We know that carers' lives can be unpredictable and that it might not be easy to commit to a scheduled training course. That’s why we've created a self-study platform where carers can engage in the same learning at a pace and time that suit them – with the support of course tutors, of course!

If you have any queries, or suggestions of further training topics that would be useful, please let us know. We always appreciate hearing from those with lived experience.
