Age Scotland supports World Arthritis Day 2011
World Arthritis Day was established in 1996 by Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) and celebrating its 15th year today.
The event aims to raise awareness of arthritis, and offers a support network, advice and help to people with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). People around the world have joined together to make their voices heard and campaign on the issues affecting people with RMDs.
In support of World Arthritis Day 2011, Age Scotland spokesman Lindsay Scott commented:
"Research reveals that keeping active and taking regular exercise can have positive effects on mental and physical wellbeing as people grow older. Looking after your health and taking exercise is important and can really help with a number of issues often related to ageing, including joint pain.
"Whilst running marathons or climbing every Monroe in Scotland won't appeal to everyone, on World Arthritis Day we are encouraging people to keep active and even take up a new hobby or interest such as trying out a new fitness activity.
"As a society we are living longer, and it is important that our longer lifespan is matched by a longer health span. It's about adding life to your years, not just years to your life."
