Blog: Preparing for extreme weather
We’re no strangers to mixed and temperamental weather in Scotland, but there are plenty of things we can all to do stay prepared, regardless of whether that means rain or sunshine.
Summer often provides the ideal conditions for thunderstorms which can develop quickly. This brings the potential for impacts such as power outages, heavy rain and localised flooding. Being prepared by having key information, phone numbers, a torch, and batteries close to hand can help to take the worry out of summer storms.
Age Scotland’s Preparing for a Powercut information sessions can help you plan for emergency situations and ensure you are supported to weather any storm. Find out more about upcoming dates here.
The Met Office also have useful WeatherReady resources, bringing together expert advice from carefully selected partner organisations to help people prepare for and respond to the weather, so they not only stay safe, but are able to make the most of it.
It might be the simplest step you can take of all but just checking the weather forecast before you get out and about can help to ensure that you’re prepared no matter what the weather is like, with pollen and UV forecasts, rainfall radar and beach forecasts all included along with the daily forecast in the Met Office app.
Age Scotland has also partnered with Scottish Water this summer to help raise awareness of the importance of hydration in older people and encourage those more vulnerable older people to sign up to the Scottish Water Priority Services Register.
