Older people urged to check Council Tax Reduction eligibility

Older people are being urged to find out if they are entitled to Council Tax Reduction following announcements that Council Tax is set to rise up to 10% in many local authorities.
Age Scotland is calling on older people on low or moderate incomes to contact the charity’s free helpline for a benefits check. Anyone qualifying for a reduction in council tax could see their overall bill reduced, as well as up to 35% off water and waste charges.
Council tax reduction, exemption and discounts are available to people with low or moderate incomes and savings, who may already qualify for social security support. People living with some mental health conditions and disabilities may also be eligible. Age Scotland helpline advisors can carry out a full check to find out if older people can access more financial support.
Katherine Crawford, chief executive of Age Scotland, said:
“A council tax hike is certainly going to alarm many older people across Scotland who are already grappling with increased energy costs and the ongoing cost of living crisis.
“It is important, therefore, that older people are in receipt of every penny of support to which they are entitled. We would urge any older person who is worried about paying their council tax bill to call our free helpline on 0800 12 44 222. Our advisors can help unlock any financial support that is available.
“This is a particularly challenging time for older people across Scotland, and we stand ready to offer support and help older people who are struggling to claim the money which is rightfully theirs.”
