Staff spotlight - 60 seconds with Head of Resources Elaine Smurthwaite
Tell us about your role at Age Scotland?
I joined Age Concern way back in 2009 for 3 months to help with the merger between Age Concern and Help the Aged – and I am still here!!
Over the years, I worked on various non HR projects for the Charity before returning to my profession as HR Manager and then to my current role of Head of Resources, which covers all aspects of HR management, health & safety, volunteering, compliance, corporate & facilities management.
The years have flown by and I am really proud of the way the Charity has grown and developed over the years and continues to do so.
What do you love most about your job?
The variety and challenges - No two days are the same. The people – the staff, our volunteers, trustees, our members, my friends and colleagues. I have huge admiration and respect for everyone. Being part of something that matters. I came from a corporate financial services background which could not be more different to the purpose and dedication demonstrated by Age Scotland and those associated with it.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Start each day with a smile and always look forwards not backwards. One hand for you and one for the boat.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?
Anything that takes me outdoors but mainly sailing, horse riding, tennis, walking and I am just learning to paddleboard! Also spending time with my family (I now have 4 granddaughters all of which have been born during my time at Age Scotland). I love going to the theatre and concerts and watching rugby and football.
How would you describe Age Scotland in 3 words?
Purposeful, Dedicated, Inspiring.
