Help for older veterans living in Scotland
Saturday 30th June is Armed Forces Day, an appropriate time to reflect on those who have served their country and made the transition to civilian life.
Unfortunately, not all of these transitions are successful. A number of studies have found that veterans are more likely to experience mental health problems than the general population. These problems, which often stem from experiences during service, can go undiagnosed for years, even when the veteran is aware that they are having problems.
The research also suggests that many thousands of veterans experiencing problems are not accessing support or assistance. This can be due to a lack of awareness of the support that is available to them and also due to a military mentality of accepting their lot and ‘making do'.
In Scotland alone, it is estimated that one in five of the Scottish population is a member of the veterans' community (which includes ex-service personnel and spouses/dependants of ex-service personnel). That's why Age Scotland teamed up with Poppy Scotland to produce the publication ‘Older Veterans Living in Scotland', a factsheet that provides information about the support, housing and specific welfare services available to veterans aged 55 years and over resident in Scotland.
It contains useful information for all ex-service personnel aged 55 and over, who live in Scotland, and their dependants.
